The project has recieved funding from Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), The Crake Foundation, Mount Allison University, and Saint Mary’s University. The Basentello Valley Archaeological Research Project (BVARP) is the archaeological investigation of a Roman imperial landholding in modern Puglia (ancient Apulia). The project, which began in the summer of 2004, is directed by Dr. Myles McCallum of Saint Mary’s University, Dr. Hans vanderLeest of Mount Allison University (Canada) Dr. Tracy Prowse of McMaster University (Canada) and Dr. Mikael Haller of Saint Francis Xavier University (Canada). The project seeks to understand better the nature of imperial properties in southern Italy, including their architectural layout, economic function, and organization, and to study the complex cultural interactions and migration brought about by the Roman conquest and occupation of the Basentello Valley. |
